Why Most Kenyan Soils Are Failing
April 13th 2026 by Wanjiku D.K
Across Kenya, many farmers are facing declining yields—not because of lack of effort, but because the soil itself is losing its strength. Healthy soil is the foundation of good harvests, yet it’s quietly degrading.
We at Hanna Roses understand the challenges that the Farmer is facing, and have come up with a comprehensive guide on how to fix our Soils and increase our yields.
Farmer Training Guide: Restoring Soil Health in Kenya
Our Training Objective is to Help farmers understand why soils are losing fertility and learn simple, affordable ways to restore soil health for better yields.
Chapter 1: Understanding the Problem
What is Happening to Our Soils?
In many parts of Kenya, soils are becoming less productive. Crops are weaker, yields are lower, and fertilizers seem less effective. The Main Causes of Soil Decline in Kenya can be summarized as....
• Continuous cropping without resting the land
• Loss of nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium)
• Increased soil acidity
• Soil erosion from rain and wind
• Burning or removing crop residues
• Over-reliance on chemical fertilizers
Chapter 2: Signs of Poor Soil Health
As a Farmer, these are the signs you should be looking out for to know if your soil is degraded........
• Yellowing crops
• Stunted growth
• Hard, compacted soil
• Poor water retention (soil dries quickly)
• Low yields even after applying fertilizer
Chapter 3: Practical Solutions for Farmers
1. Add Organic Matter
What to use:
• Compost
• Animal manure
• Crop residues (do not burn)
Benefits:
• Improves soil fertility
• Increases water retention
• Supports beneficial soil organisms
2. Practice Crop Rotation
Example:
• Season 1: Maize
• Season 2: Beans (legume)
Benefits:
• Restores nitrogen naturally
• Reduces pests and diseases
3. Reduce Soil Acidity
Solution:
• Apply agricultural lime (based on soil testing)
Benefits:
• Improves nutrient availability
• Enhances crop growth
4. Use Fertilizers Properly
Tips:
• Combine organic manure with chemical fertilizers
• Apply correct amounts (avoid overuse)
5. Control Soil Erosion
Methods:
• Plant along contours
• Use terraces on slopes
• Plant cover crops or grasses
6. Test Your Soil
Why it matters:
• Helps you know exactly what your soil needs
• Saves money by avoiding unnecessary inputs
Healthy soil = Healthy crops = Better yields = More income
Chapter 4: Community Engagement
As a Farmer it is advisable that you engage as much as you can with your fellow farmers. Regular discussions with neighbour about their farming practices alongside attending agricultural trade shows and fairs, allow you to learn and enhance the best farming practices being deployed in Kenya. With the knowledge gained, you should be able to identify soil problems on your farm. You can start small by applying at least one new practice each season and observe the results.
Taking care of the soil is a long-term investment that benefits both current and future generations in Kenya.
